About the Project:
SIG was awarded the package to supply both the Ancon Optima Relieving Angles and the 25/14 Brick Restraint System by ABM Contractors for both of their education projects in Malahide and Harold’s Cross.
The new Harold’s Cross national school building features 16 classrooms, as well as two Special Education Needs (SEN) classrooms.
Phase 2 of the Malahide / Portmarnock ETNS includes an Engineering Suite, Materials Technology (Wood), a second Art room, Media Space and a state-of-the-art Sports Hall with fitness suite and changing rooms.
SIG’s Contribution
SIG’s role encompassed supply, technical support, and ensuring seamless integration of the masonry support and restraint systems. By providing both the Optima and 25/14 systems from stock across its branch network in Ireland, SIG mitigated risks of delays once brickwork commenced.
Overcoming Challenges with Technical Expertise
The project’s success hinged on the expert contributions from SIG’s Technical Solutions team, who provided comprehensive support during the critical design and installation phases.
Ancon 25/14 Restraint System
The Ancon 25/14 Restraint System is designed to tie masonry cladding back to steel or concrete frames.
Key features of this system include:
- Channel: The 25/14 channel is supplied in lengths of 2700mm or 3000mm.
- Fixing Method: Self-drilling high-thread screws fix through the channel and insulation into the steel
frame. Fischer FFS Screws and Ancon CFS+ screws are used for fixing the channel back to concrete
frame buildings. - Wall Ties: Once the channel is installed, Ancon SD25 wall ties can be positioned at any point along its
length and are built into the bed joints of the outer leaf of brickwork.
ANCON OPTIMA MASONRY SUPPORT SYSTEM
The Ancon Optima System comprises a two-step angle (with pre-marked fixing zones), brackets and
locking wedges.
The angle slides into position through cut-outs in the brackets. Once the angle is positioned, a locking
wedge is tapped in place with a hammer through the notches in each bracket.
Brackets are available as standard to suit cavities from 60mm to 200mm in 5mm increments and are
universal for the five Ancon Optima Systems. All angles, excluding corner sections, are designed to be used with two brackets.
The fixing zones on the angles are colour coded for the five standard systems. SIG has a large stock holding of both of the above systems across its branch network on the island of Ireland.
We understand that once brickwork starts on site there can’t be any delays and stock availability is
imperative to keep projects on track and ahead of schedule
